Public Notice: Protecting Residents from Mosquito-Borne Disease

Capital Heights, MD – August 15, 2026

The Prince George's County Health Department is reminding residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites and mosquito-borne disease, particularly during peak mosquito activity from dusk to dawn.

Protect Yourself from Mosquito Bites

Residents can reduce their risk of mosquito bites by taking the following precautions:

• Wear long, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing when outdoors.
• Use insect repellent according to the product label.
• Avoid mosquito-infested areas, particularly during peak mosquito activity from dusk to dawn.
• Install, inspect, and repair window and door screens.
• Regularly clean bird baths, pet food, and water bowls.
• Remove or empty containers and other items that can collect standing water around homes and businesses.

While not all mosquitoes carry disease, taking steps to reduce mosquito exposure and eliminate standing water can help protect individuals, families, and the community.

Mosquito Control Activity Scheduled for August 16

Following the detection of a mosquito pool in Prince George’s County that tested positive for a mosquito-borne disease, the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA), in coordination with the Prince George’s County Health Department, has scheduled additional mosquito control activity in the Laurel area.

Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) truck-based spraying to control adult mosquitoes is scheduled for Sunday, August 16, 2026, after 9:00 p.m.

If weather conditions prevent the scheduled spraying, the activity will be rescheduled for Monday, August 17, 2026.

MDA mosquito control personnel will use a permethrin-based solution approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in public health mosquito control programs. As a precaution, residents are encouraged to avoid outdoor activities in the treatment area during the scheduled spraying period.

The Prince George’s County Health Department will continue to coordinate with MDA and monitor mosquito activity and public health concerns. Additional information will be provided to residents as appropriate.
