Prince George's County Waste and Recycling Facilities to Close Early Due to Hazardous Air Quality
Largo, MD - Due to hazardous air quality conditions affecting the Washington metropolitan region, the Prince George's County Department of the Environment (DoE) will close several waste and recycling facilities early today, Friday, July 17, 2026, to protect the health and safety of employees and residents.
The following facilities will close at 2:00 p.m. today:
- Brown Station Road Sanitary Landfill, Upper Marlboro
- Brown Station Road Residential Drop-Off Convenience Center, Upper Marlboro
- Missouri Avenue Residential Drop-Off Convenience Center, Brandywine
- Organics Compost Facility, Upper Marlboro
Today's early closure follows the National Weather Service's issuance of a Code Purple Air Quality Alert for the Washington, D.C., and Maryland region due to widespread wildfire smoke.
A Code Purple Air Quality Alert indicates that air pollution has reached very unhealthy levels and poses a serious health risk. Under these conditions, everyone, not just sensitive groups, is likely to experience adverse health effects.
Residents planning to visit any of the County's waste or recycling facilities today should complete their business before 2:00 p.m. or visit when the facilities resume normal operating hours.
