Solar Energy in the County

Prince George’s County is committed to promoting the continued, equitable advancement of solar in our community. We are seeking ways to encourage solar energy development in our region. Our solar goals can be found here.

Our Climate Action Implementation Strategy Plan outlines the County’s priority strategies, including those related to renewable energy. We continue to make progress on our solar goals through actions such as our climate action plans, community solar deployment, the Solarize grant program, partnering with the state’s Maryland Solar Access Program (MSAP) and Solar Energy Equity (SEE) solar programs, and the solar pilot grant funded through the Public Service Commission’s Exelon Merger Order No. 88631, Case No. 9449.

To ensure continued progress, the County will track key metrics related to solar energy deployment, such as the number of solar systems installed, permitting processing time, and successful outreach strategies.

  • Educate Prince George’s County residents on the benefits of renewable energy
  • Develop programs and policies that accelerate community-wide implementation of solar photovoltaics
  • Expand partnerships, incentives, and financing solutions to increase deployment of solar
  • Utilize public buildings to “lead by example” by implementing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems
  • Commitment of County staff’s time and resources to improve the local market for solar PV deployment

Progress Towards Solar

Check out our progress towards advancing solar energy development in Prince George’s County below.  As of September 2025:

  • Powering County Operations with Renewable Energy: Office of Central Services, in partnership with the Department of Environment’s Climate & Energy division, has installed five (5) solar canopy systems on parking lots at five government sites.
  • Clean and renewable energy projects have been installed on about 8% of County homes and businesses
  • The County is developing a solar siting tool through ArcGIS software, allowing for easy tracking of solar installation progress in the community
  • The State of Clean Energy Report is in development at the County, which will provide a detailed look into the progress made and the future of clean and renewable energy in Prince George’s County. It will be published soon on the County’s  Climate and Energy webpage.

Why We Are Going Solar

Solar energy uses a renewable energy source – the sun – and provides many benefits for individuals and the region. Benefits of solar:

  • Improves environmental quality by reducing carbon emissions and air pollution
  • Supports local solar companies in Maryland
  • Creates local jobs
  • Saves money on energy costs
  • Improves electric grid resilience during peak demand and other stresses to the system, and
  • Advances the County’s climate change mitigation implementation strategy to equitably transition to a resilient and renewable energy system

Job Training and Educational Opportunities

In partnership with Prince George’s County Department of the Environment, Prince George’s County Community College offers a Sustainable Energy and Workforce Development Program. This tuition-free program provides occupational skills and work-based learning for residents seeking to enter the renewable energy sector.
