Energy Benchmarking

Tracking Energy Use. Driving Smarter Buildings.

Prince George’s County is committed to reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in large buildings—one of the largest sources of energy consumption in the County. Through the Building Energy Benchmarking Program, owners of covered buildings are required to track and report their annual energy and water use.

Benchmarking provides valuable data to help building owners and managers make informed decisions that cut costs, improve performance, and support the County’s climate goals.

What is Benchmarking?

Energy benchmarking is the process of measuring a building’s energy and water use, comparing performance to similar buildings, and tracking improvements over time.

By submitting benchmarking data each year, building owners can:

  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and efficiency upgrades
  • Gain a clearer picture of building performance
  • Stay compliant with County requirements
  • Contribute to a healthier, more sustainable community

Who Must Comply

The Benchmarking Program applies to County, commercial, and multifamily buildings over 50,000 square feet.

Building owners must report energy and water usage annually through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager tool.

Benefits of Benchmarking

Save Money: Identify ways to lower utility bills through efficiency improvements.

Increase Value: Efficient buildings are more attractive to tenants and buyers.

Meet Climate Goals: Benchmarking helps the County reduce greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2030.

Transparency: Data helps residents, businesses, and policymakers understand progress and opportunities.
