We are thrilled to announce that the Lower Beaverdam Creek Watershed Restoration Project has secured vital grant funds to support the people and well-being of residents living within the Lower Beaverdam Creek Watershed. Prince George's County, Maryland

The Lower Beaverdam Creek Watershed Restoration Project is a comprehensive initiative designed to improve water quality, mitigate flooding, and restore natural habitats throughout the Lower Beaverdam Creek watershed in Prince George’s County. This project is partially funded through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and represents a significant investment in the health and resilience of our local waterways and communities.

Project Overview

The project focuses on understanding and improving the watershed’s land use, land cover, and
hydrology to identify and design restoration opportunities that manage stormwater, control
flooding, and remediate hazardous sediments contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

Planned activities include:

• Improving degraded stream channels and floodplains to reduce flooding impacts from urban
development and extreme weather.
• Assessing stormwater management controls and drainage infrastructure to convey projected flows
safely.
• Identifying and implementing options to remove chemical contaminants, nutrients, and
sediments.
• Restoring natural habitats and enhancing soil and slope stability.
• Creating buffers around sensitive areas to improve aesthetics, habitat quality, and erosion
control.
• Reducing nonnative invasive vegetation and improving soil structure through composting and
tilling.

Expected Outcomes

The project will produce critical baseline assessments and recommendations for:
• Stream and habitat restoration
• Stormwater management facility upgrades
• PCB remediation strategies across the entire watershed

These actions will support a comprehensive, watershed-based approach to restoring the Lower Beaverdam Creek and improving water quality in the Anacostia River.
