Joseph P. Gill was confirmed as the Director of the Prince George’s County Department of the Environment (DoE) on May 14, 2019.  He previously served as the Deputy Director of DoE where he was responsible for overseeing day-to-day agency operations for clean water, flood control, recycling, waste management, litter prevention and animal services. 

He joined the County from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) where he served as Secretary (2013-15) and Deputy Secretary (2010-13).  Gill chaired the Governor's Council on the Chesapeake Bay; represented the Governor on President Obama’s Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience and served on the Maryland Climate Change Commission; and co-chaired with the Maryland Superintendent of State Schools the Maryland Partnership for Children in Nature. 

He is active in civic, community and religion organizations.  He is board member emeritus of the Light House Homeless Prevention Center, where he served as president and project director responsible for the construction of a new 25,000 square foot facility.  For his work, Gill received the Anne Arundel County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We Share the Dream Award and the Maryland Attorney General's pro bono public service award.  Gill is a board member and building committee chair of the Samaritan House, a facility providing addiction-related and recovery services currently expanding to develop Campus for Recovery to provide a continuum of service care.  He is president of Listening Hearts Ministries, Inc., an organization dedicated to helping people discover life’s call to ministry and service.  Gill is an active member of his church where he has served as senior warden and vestry member.  

Before joining DNR, Gill served in various capacities in the Maryland Office of the Attorney General including Deputy Counsel at the Department of Health and Principal Counsel at DNR. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Georgetown University Law Center, a husband and father of two grown daughters.
