Maryland Public Information Requests

DoE provides access to public records in accordance with Maryland’s Public Information Act (MPIA). Requests for information under the MPIA only require the production of existing documents under the control of the department. The MPIA does not require the department to compile information from existing documents or create documents in response to general inquiries. Public records requests can be made online or at 301-772-8947.

If you prefer to submit a written request, your request should sufficiently identify the records that you are seeking including a clearly identified subject matter, specific dates or ranges of dates of documents requested, and name or titles of individuals that may have documents responsive to your request, if known, so that responsive documents can be more readily retrieved.

Send MPIA Requests to:

Time Limits

DoE will respond to your request within a reasonable period, but not more than 30 days after receipt of the application. Staff will contact you if additional information is required and provide the estimated charge for your request, if applicable. In the event the time to produce the public record is estimated to be more than 10 working days, DoE will contact you in writing or by electronic mail with the amount of time the department anticipates it will take to produce the public record; an estimate of the range of fees that may be charged and the reason for the delay. A response may include copies of the records requested or a notification that records are available for your review. Should the department need additional time, due to the nature of the request, staff will contact you to discuss an extension of time. If DoE is not the appropriate custodian of records, you will be notified within 10 calendar days of receipt of the request.
