Improvements to Historic Resources

The Historic Preservation Property Tax Credit encourages the restoration, rehabilitation, and preservation of historically significant properties in Prince George's County by providing a credit against County real property taxes for eligible preservation expenses.

The program supports the protection of structures with historic, architectural, or cultural significance while helping property owners offset the cost of approved restoration and preservation work.

Credit Amount

The credit is applied against the County portion of the real property tax for eligible restoration and preservation expenses.

  • The credit becomes available during the tax year immediately following the year in which the eligible work is completed.
  • A claim may be filed within five (5) years after completion of the eligible work.
  • If property taxes were paid during the eligible credit period, the property owner may receive a refund.
  • Any unused portion of an approved credit may be carried forward during the remainder of the same five-year eligibility period.
