Youth Justice Unit
Overview
The Youth Justice Unit is responsible for handling delinquency cases involving individuals under the age of 18 in Prince George’s County.
The Unit’s primary focus is not only accountability but also identifying and addressing the underlying causes of juvenile behavior. Through a balanced approach, the Unit works to provide support, intervention, and opportunities for rehabilitation—helping young people avoid further involvement in the justice system.
A central goal of this work is to reduce and ultimately disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline by connecting youth with resources that promote long-term success.
Collaborative Approach
The Youth Justice Unit partners with agencies and community organizations to provide alternatives to detention and formal court involvement whenever appropriate.
Key partners include:
- Department of Juvenile Services
- Community-based organizations
- Diversion programs
- Teen Court initiatives
These partnerships help ensure that youth receive services, supervision, and guidance tailored to their individual needs, while minimizing the negative impact of early justice system involvement.
Programs & Resources
The Unit works closely with programs designed to support youth and families, including:
