Victim / Witness Unit
Overview
The Victim / Witness Unit provides comprehensive support, advocacy, and guidance to victims and witnesses throughout the criminal justice process.
Victim/Witness Coordinators play a critical role in helping individuals navigate what can often be a confusing and emotional experience. They offer support to those facing fear, uncertainty, and frustration, while ensuring that victims understand their rights and the stages of a case.
Coordinators also serve as a key link between victims and:
- Prosecutors
- Law enforcement and investigative personnel
- Court officials
Victim Support & Advocacy
A fundamental right of every victim is the right to be informed, present, and heard during the prosecution process.
The Victim and Witness Unit ensures that victims are empowered to exercise these rights by:
- Explaining the criminal justice process and case developments
- Providing ongoing guidance and emotional support
- Facilitating communication with prosecutors and court personnel
- Assisting with participation in key stages of a case
The Unit also supports victims in preparing and delivering Victim Impact Statements, ensuring their voices are heard during sentencing and other critical proceedings.
