Strategic Investigations Unit (SIU)
Overview
The Strategic Investigations Unit (SIU) focuses on prosecuting the most serious and repeat violent offenders in Prince George’s County. The Unit targets individuals and groups whose criminal activity poses an ongoing threat to public safety.
SIU prosecutes three primary categories of offenders:
- Repeat violent offenders with three or more prior convictions for violent felonies
- “String” offenders responsible for three or more related violent felony offenses
- Gang-related offenders who commit crimes at the direction of, in furtherance of, or for the benefit of a criminal gang
The Unit handles a wide range of serious offenses, including:
- Murder and attempted murder
- Armed and unarmed carjacking
- Armed robbery and strong-arm robbery (commercial and individual victims)
- Assault offenses
- Handgun violations
Because violent crime often crosses jurisdictional boundaries, SIU collaborates regularly with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners across Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia.
Diversion & Reentry Programs
The State’s Attorney’s Office recognizes that not every case requires prosecution and that appropriate intervention can reduce recidivism and improve long-term outcomes.
Prince George’s County offers diversion programs for eligible individuals charged with certain offenses. These programs provide an opportunity to:
- Avoid formal prosecution
- Complete structured requirements and programming
- Potentially avoid a permanent criminal record upon successful completion
These initiatives are designed to promote accountability while supporting rehabilitation and safer communities.
