Understanding Crime Statistics
The statistics published on this site represent crime reported to the Prince George's County Police Department. When a crime is reported, it is classified as one of dozen offense types that are defined by a specific reporting system.
The Prince George's County Police Department classifies crime in three main reporting systems:
- Daily Crime Reporting (DCR)
Used primarily for internal planning; offense definitions are more closely coupled to investigative responsibility or weapons used.
- FBI UCR/National Incident-Based Crime Reporting (UCR/NIBRS)
Used to report crime to State/Federal agencies as required by law or agreement; offense definitions are defined by the FBI under the Uniform Crime Reporting Program.
- FBI UCR/Summary Reporting System (UCR/SRS)
Legacy FBI Uniform Crime Reporting System that is being replaced by UCR/NIBRS. Most statistical data prior to 2018 will use UCR/SRS offense definitions.
These reporting systems use different offense definitions, and the same criminal act may be classified as a different offense type under each system. It is important to understand the reporting system in use when comparing crime statistics from any source.
