Immigration Enforcement Activity Verification Service

A person observing immigration enforcement activity in the County may call 9-1-1 to request assistance from the Police Department. A Prince George’s County Police officer will respond.

PGPD will visually verify that the involved individuals are federal immigration enforcement agents. PGPD can make these verifications by observing indicators such as vehicles and clothing labeled with federal agency names and logos. If PGPD is unable to visually verify the identity of federal immigration enforcement agents, they may take reasonable steps to verify that the persons involved are immigration agents and not persons engaged in criminal activity. In the limited circumstance where visual verification is not possible, PGPD officers may request identifying information to determine whether persons wearing masks are immigration enforcement officers.

The enforcement of civil federal immigration laws falls exclusively within the authority of federal law enforcement. This means that state and local law enforcement officers do not have legal grounds to stop, detain, search, arrest, or extend a stop of an individual, based solely on an administrative (civil) warrant, or an investigation of civil federal immigration laws unless the local law enforcement officer has been deputized pursuant to a Cooperation Agreement under 8 U.S.C. §1357(g) (commonly referred to as § 287 Agreements). The Prince George’s County Police Department has not entered into a 287 Agreement with federal authorities nor does the PGPD conduct civil immigration enforcement.
