Automated Speed Enforcement Program
The Prince George's County Automated Speed Enforcement Program was launched on August 22, 2011 (PDF), to increase our safety in school zones and within areas containing institutions of higher education.
The Prince George's County Police Department plans to place automated speed enforcement cameras throughout the County to assist in reducing instances of speeding and motor vehicle/pedestrian accidents. The Prince George's County Police Department plans to place automated speed enforcement cameras throughout the County to assist in reducing instances of speeding and motor vehicle/pedestrian accidents.
The hours of operation for school zone enforcement are from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Friday. A school zone is an area within a half-mile radius of any school established by Prince George's County and the State Highway Administration, pursuant to the Maryland Transportation Code 21-803.1.
TA 21-809
In accordance with TA 21-809 a speed monitoring system may be placed In Prince George's County, on that part of a highway located within the grounds of an Institution of Higher Education as defined in § 10-101(H) of the education article, or within one-half mile of the grounds of a building or property used by the Institution of Higher Education where generally accepted traffic and engineering practices indicate that motor vehicle, pedestrian, or bicycle traffic is substantially generated or influenced by the Institution of Higher Education.
Enforcement locations are published on the Police Department's website and in a newspaper of record. Additionally, speed enforcement signs are placed on each roadway with automated speed enforcement cameras prior to automated speed enforcement. Vehicles traveling 12 or more miles per hour over the posted speed limit will cause a violation to be generated.
This violation is verified by a police officer and a citation, to include the vehicle's speed and photographs is generated. This citation is mailed to the owner of the vehicle. The citation explains how to pay a violation or how to request a hearing in court. Fines are $40, and do not involve points on a driver's record or insurance penalties Pay Citation.
Speed Monitoring Systems Reform Act of 2014
Senate Bill 350 Speed Monitoring Systems Reform Act of 2014, which became effective June 1, 2014, stipulates "A local jurisdiction that authorizes a program of speed monitoring systems shall designate an official or employee to investigate and respond to questions or concerns about the local jurisdiction's speed monitoring system program."
Prince George's County has designated the Commander of the Police Department's Automated Enforcement Division as the Ombudsman. Ombudsman is defined as "a government official who hears and investigates complaints by private citizens."
The Ombudsman can only assist with issues involving citations issued by the Prince George's County Police Department's Automated Speed Enforcement Program. The Ombudsman cannot assist with Maryland Uniform Citations, Parking Tickets, School Bus Stop Arm Tickets, or automated enforcement citations issued by any municipal police department.
