PRESS RELEASE
County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy Orders Transparency and Accountability in the Administration of County Grant Funds
LARGO, MD — Prince George’s County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy has been troubled by the allegations of irregularities with the County Council’s grants program. After conversations with constituents, members of the Prince George’s County Council and reviewing documents related to the County Council’s grant programs, County Executive Braveboy is announcing the following actions to ensure transparency and accountability.
Demanding the Immediate Return of Funds
County Executive Braveboy will demand the immediate return of funds from the Edward Charles Foundation and/or Community on the Frontlines. The County Council, including Chair Oriadha, agrees that the funds should be returned. We have signed a joint letter today to the Edward Charles Foundation demanding the funds be sent back to Prince George’s County. The immediate return of funds will preserve taxpayer resources while an investigation is pending. Getting the taxpayers’ money back right now is the best way to protect it while we work with the County Council to correct deficiencies in the Council’s grants program.
Request for Independent Investigation
County Executive Braveboy is requesting the County Auditor to initiate an independent investigation pursuant to Section 313 of the County Charter. The investigation will focus on funds disbursed to the Edward Charles Foundation and/or Community on the Frontlines (entities). County Executive Braveboy is requesting the Office of Audits and Investigations to investigate the following areas: 1) an examination of how County funds disbursed to the entities were used, 2) which accounts controlled by the entities contain County funds and the amounts remaining in such accounts, 3) documentation of activities and services rendered by recipients of County grant funds disbursed by the entities, and 4) any fees charged by the Edward Charles Foundation for its services as the fiscal sponsor. We further believe that the Office of Audits and Investigations should retain and work with an outside auditor to implement a truly independent and comprehensive investigation.
“Prince George’s County taxpayers have a right to know that their tax dollars are being used to serve communities, families, and those who are deserving. With my actions announced today, I am reiterating my commitment to transparency and accountability in overseeing how every taxpayer dollar is spent,” said County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy.
