Commission for Animal Control
The Office of the County Executive for Prince George’s County is currently accepting letters of interest and resumes from qualified individuals seeking appointment to the Commission for Animal Control. Established under Subtitle 3 of the County Code, the Commission serves as an integral part of County government, advising on policies and regulations that promote animal welfare, public health, and community safety. The Commission also operates in a quasi‑judicial capacity, conducting hearings on animal control violations, public nuisance determinations, and related enforcement matters. Citizen members play a vital role in providing community perspective, supporting fair and consistent decision‑making, and strengthening public trust in the County’s animal control system.
Appointment Details
- Members are appointed by the County Executive and confirmed by the County Council.
- Membership terms are two (2) years and are staggered.
- The Commission elects a Chairman and Vice Chairman annually.
Who Should Apply
We are seeking applicants representing a diverse range of professional and community perspectives, including:
- Licensed veterinarians practicing in Prince George’s County (or their representatives)
- Representatives from humane organizations
- Kennel owners and pet industry professionals
- Residents with experience in animal welfare, public health, or community advocacy
- Individuals committed to responsible animal care, safety, and enforcement
Committee Responsibilities
Members of the Commission on Animal Control:
- Advise the County Executive and relevant agencies on animal control policies, regulations, and programs
- Recommend standards for animal care, custody, and control, including oversight of the Animal Services and Adoption Center
- Review and provide recommendations on the Animal Control Program budget
- Conduct public hearings on violations, complaints, and appeals related to animal control laws
Issue findings, orders, and civil penalties where appropriate
- Support the development of laws and policies to promote humane treatment and public safety
