Thomas F. Johnson II is a proud Prince George’s County native who has dedicated his career to empowering communities and creating opportunities for all residents. With over a decade of experience in government relations, public affairs, and strategic communications, Thomas has worked tirelessly to build partnerships that advance equity, education, and progress.
Thomas began his public service journey at Bowie State University, serving as the Assistant Athletic Director overseeing community engagement, gameday operations, and special projects. Under his leadership, he developed strong partnerships with local businesses, professional sports organizations such as the Washington Commanders and Washington Wizards, local high schools, and various county and state agencies—all to support the students and faculty of Bulldog Nation.
Thomas led the creation of a partnership between the Washington Commanders and Best Buy of Bowie, giving students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to purchase essential back‑to‑school technology, including laptops and printers, at significantly discounted rates. He also oversaw the annual Bowie State Athletics Golf Tournament, which provides scholarships to students in need of financial assistance. Through strategic outreach, he collaborated with the NBA, NFLPA, and NLB, securing a record number of donations to support the event’s mission.
Thomas then joined the Department of Social Services as the Education Liaison for foster youth in Prince George’s County, where he created the innovative “Bowie At a Glance” program. This initiative gave foster youth the opportunity to visit Bowie State University and experience college life firsthand, helping them explore pathways to higher education and brighter futures.
He later served under the Office of the County Executive, leading the Transforming Neighborhoods Initiative (TNI). Under his leadership, his assigned areas achieved the highest level of positive change in the shortest amount of time, improving the quality of life for countless residents. Thomas then transitioned to the Office of Community Relations, where he managed the 2020 Census campaign in partnership with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. His efforts secured the highest amount of federal and state funding for the County’s Census outreach to date. During the pandemic, Thomas also directed the COVID-19 Mobile Vaccination Unit, ensuring equitable access to life-saving resources across Prince George’s County.
Most recently, Thomas served as Government Affairs Manager at WSSC Water, where he championed policies and initiatives that protect our environment and enhance the quality of life. His ability to navigate complex issues and bring people together has earned him recognition as a trusted voice for community engagement and collaboration.
Thomas is an alumnus of Gonzaga College High School, one of the region’s most prestigious institutions, where he lettered in both Basketball and Track & Field and learned the values of leadership, service, and integrity. He went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from East Carolina University and earned a Master of Science in Sports Management and Administration from Liberty University. He is currently pursuing his Project Management Professional certification.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Thomas is a devoted husband of over 25 years to his high school sweetheart and the proud father of five amazing children. His deep roots in Prince George’s County and lifelong commitment to service inspire his vision for a stronger, more connected community.
