Prior to assuming the role of Director, Office of Homeland Security in January 2016, Gevonia Whittington entered the Prince George’s County Government in 1989, as a civilian station clerk with the Police Department. She entered the police academy in 1993 and retired in December of 2015, at the rank of Deputy Chief. She has served in numerous capacities throughout her career to include patrol, investigations, canine, and internal affairs. At the rank of Captain, she was the Assistant Commander of the Special Operations Division (SOD) and responsible for the management of the Aviation Section, Canine Section, Tactical Section (Emergency Services Teams and Tactical Teams), Traffic Section, Special Events Section (FedEx)/Civil Disturbance Unit and the Marine Unit (National Harbor). Thus, carrying the responsibility of managing, mitigating and/or preparing for critical incidents in the County.
In her last position as Deputy Chief, Bureau of Administration (BOA), she oversaw several Divisions with significant responsibilities to the Agency’s overall mission, which included the following divisions: Training and Education, Fiscal Management, Personnel, Recruiting and Background, and Risk Management.
