[ARCHIVED] Statement from Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III

President Trump’s Executive Order to Eliminate Certain Affordable Care Act (ACA) Regulations

Upper Marlboro, MD – Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III released this statement following today’s news of President Trump’s Executive Order allowing the purchase of health insurance that does not meet state regulations and Affordable Care Act (ACA) protections.

“Today, President Trump’s administration continued its assault on the Affordable Care Act by undermining the insurance marketplace by allowing individuals and small businesses to buy different types of health plans with lower prices that also have fewer benefits and protections for consumers. These types of plans are not currently allowed by the Affordable Care Act. This decision will most certainly drive up the costs for those individuals and families with pre-existing and costly medical conditions because their care will not be covered under the cheaper plans. This will certainly negatively impact our most vulnerable citizens.

Since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, we have reduced Prince George’s County’s uninsured rate by 50%. This increase of residents being covered has assisted the County to assure the financial viability of our new University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center in Largo, and to further expand our primary healthcare system. President Trump’s executive order would have a detrimental impact on these successes we have achieved to improve the health of Prince Georgians.

As caretaker for a spouse with costly medical bills, my family understands firsthand the impact that medical expenses can have on a family’s budget. However, I cannot imagine what the financial impact of expensive medical care and high cost insurance coverage is for individuals and families who lack the resources to provide for them. As a society, we must look out for these families and individuals because we certainly have a President who does not.

From reducing EPA regulations, to potential tax cut legislation that will favor the super wealthy, to his efforts to remove federal funding from jurisdictions like Prince George’s County over immigration policy, President Trump continues to propose and support ideas that do not reflect and are not supported by the residents of Prince George’s County. It is a shame that, after eight years under the leadership of President Obama, who did his best to govern for all Americans, we now have a President who is only looking out for his base of supporters and specific corporate interests.

It is imperative that we continue to engage and assist our Congressional Delegation in their vigilant fight against the Trump Administration’s short-sighted policies and agenda, and to minimize their catastrophic impacts on this County, State, and nation.

In the meantime, every resident who is currently utilizing the Affordable Care Act, or any resident who is currently uninsured, needs to be reminded that the 2018 enrollment period opens on Wednesday, November 1, 2018. For information on how to enroll, please go to http://www.pgchealthconnect.org/.”
