Prince George’s County Kicks-Off Aggressive Litter Campaign by Investing an Additional $2 Million in Litter Clean-up
County officials call on the community to join “Litter Movement” to significantly reduce litter and beautify county neighborhoods, roads and streets
LARGO, MD- Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, along with County Council Chair Derrick L. Davis and Vice Chair Danielle Glaros, will announce the County’s additional investment of $2 million for countywide litter pick-up. This aggressive clean-up effort will be led by the Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) and will kick-off on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at the Woodlawn Recreation Center on Greenvale Parkway in Hyattsville, Maryland. Several key agencies ranging from public safety to public schools will join in partnership to help get litter off County roads and streets.
“This is a beautiful county and we want everyone to see its beauty. Litter takes away from that beauty and distorts the view of our gorgeous green spaces covered with trees and flowers. This campaign is about us being more aggressive in picking up and preventing litter in our community,” said County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III. “I’m calling on our public agencies to collaborate with the private and nonprofit sectors to make litter reduction a major emphasis in our county. This is more than a campaign, it is a movement, and we are excited about bringing together both County and State resources to make it happen.”
DPW&T estimates that about 1700 tons of litter have been collected thus far in the County in 2017. “We welcome the additional resources to help with our litter collection efforts. We are also going to need the support of businesses, our residents and our agency partners to really reduce litter and further beautify Prince George’s County,” said Darrell B. Mobley, Director of DPW&T.
The “Litter Movement” will be a sustained effort and partnership in all nine Council Districts to bolster litter collection efforts. The Department of the Environment has developed a litter tracker application and will focus on efforts along the Anacostia watershed to address federal environmental directives. The Department of Corrections will assist by providing inmate support with collection. Furthermore, a comprehensive educational outreach effort will be deployed county-wide and in partnership with the public schools. Taken collectively, the efforts will make Prince George’s County cleaner and more attractive to residents and visitors alike.
