[ARCHIVED] Statement from Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III

4th Circuit Court of Appeals decision upholding Maryland’s ban on semiautomatic guns with military features

Upper Marlboro, MD - Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, released this statement following the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals decision upholding Maryland’s ban on semiautomatic guns:

“I applaud the decision of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold the values that a strong majority of Marylanders share when it comes to gun violence prevention.  It is important that we protect the rights provided by the 2nd Amendment, but it is equally important to ensure that all citizens are safe.

There is a vast difference between the right of responsible gun owners to bear arms and ownership of military-style weapons that have been used by dangerous people for massacres and to wreak havoc in places like Newtown, San Bernardino, Orlando, and at Virginia Tech. Yesterday’s decision legally justifies this common sense approach and intent by our General Assembly in creating and passing this legislation.

I also appreciate the work of Attorney General Brian Frosh for successfully defending this legislation through the appeals process, as well as the members of the 2013 Maryland General Assembly and former Governor Martin O’Malley for an important law that has made Marylanders safer.”
