For a limited time, County residents can save $54 off the purchase of a rain barrel and get it FREE after rebate!

Largo, MD – Prince George’s County Government in partnership with the City of Hyattsville, Plumbers and Gasfitters Local 5 Washington D.C. and the Hyattsville Environmental Committee is making it easier for homeowners to enjoy the benefits of rainwater harvesting. From September 23 through Sunday, October 23, 2016, County residents may purchase a rain barrel at a discounted fee of $75. The barrels are free after rebate, and residents will only need to purchase the gutter attachment. Non-residents can take advantage of the discounted price which provides a savings of $54 off the regular retail price of $129.

“This collaboration represents the best of public-private partnerships in sustainability efforts,” said Prince George’s County Department of the Environment Director Adam Ortiz. “Rain barrels are a great way to prevent stormwater pollution and reuse water and it’s just one more way you can make Prince George’s a greener place to live, work and play.”

As an added bonus, purchasers can attend a rain barrel installation demonstration where they can pick up their purchased rain barrels and apply for the rebate*. The free workshop is Saturday, October 29 at the Plumbers & Gasfitters Training Facility located at 5000 Forbes Boulevard in Lanham. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; no registration is required.

The rain barrel holds 50 gallons and captures rain water from a home’s downspout which can be used for many purposes including watering your lawn and washing your car. The barrels are made in the USA from 100% recycled plastic, include all needed parts and can be purchased online at http://www.rainbarrelprogram.org/hyattsville.

Rain barrels are one of seven stormwater practices included in the County’s Rain Check Rebate program. Homeowners can receive up to $4,000 in rebates for a residential property, and businesses can receive up to $20,000 in rebates for a commercial property.

For more information on the rebate program, visit http://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/313/Rebates or contact CountyClick 3-1-1.

*Only Prince George’s County property owners are eligible for the rebate. Residents of the City of Bowie are not eligible for the rebate as the City has its own stormwater management program.
