LARGO, MARYLAND –Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, the Prince George’s County Health Department and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission Department of Parks and Recreation will continue the Step it Up! Family Fitness Club’s walk/run series at Oxon Run Park at the Hillcrest Heights Community Center on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 and Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. This event is part of a walking and running club campaign over the next seven months designed to engage residents to commit to healthy eating and activities at various parks, tracks and trails in Prince George’s County.

“I am so proud and thankful to the Prince George’s County Health Department and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission for creating this campaign and the opportunity it provides for us to promote wellness as well as community and fellowship,” said Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III. “I hope that Prince Georgians from all over the County will continue to join our Step it Up! Family Fitness Club campaign at the historic and beautiful Oxon Run Park at the Hillcrest Heights Community Center for our two August run/walk events on Wednesday, August 3rd and Wednesday, August 17th.”

The Step it Up! Family Fitness Club will be held twice a month continuing through November 2016. The initiative is inspired by the County’s mission to reduce the risks of County residents developing chronic diseases, and encouraging our residents to say “YES” to a healthier lifestyle. The goal of this fitness campaign is to reduce the impact of chronic diseases that include Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, Osteoarthritis, and other diseases. 67.6% of adults in Prince George’s County are classified as overweight or obese, and in response we are providing more opportunities to participate in physical activities throughout the County.
