FITNESS MEETS MENTAL WELLNESS AT THE UPCOMING PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY SPLEX EXPO

County to Host Fitness and Mental Health Expo for Residents and Athletes

LARGO, MD – The Prince George’s County Health Department’s PreventionLink program and the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Facility have partnered to host a full day of workshops, seminars, and wellness experiences in recognition of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and Mental Health Awareness Month. The SPLEX Family Fun and Fitness Day will take place on Saturday, May 20, 2023, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex at 8001 Sheriff Road in Landover. The event is free to the public, and registration is not required.

The expo will feature multiple activities and experiences relevant to maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Residents will have the opportunity to attend workshops on topics such as healthy eating, dispelling fitness myths, mental health awareness, stress management, and diabetes prevention. There will be activities for the entire family, including a fitness challenge and a mini health fair. Attendees can also participate in fitness and wellness demonstrations, health screenings, and learn about healthy food options. 

PreventionLink is a community-based Prince George’s County Health Department program dedicated to alleviating chronic disease and other health disparities by engaging communities in health-promotion activities and initiatives. This partnership with the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex is part of an ongoing effort to provide valuable free and low-cost resources and support to Prince George’s residents. 

“We are thrilled to partner with the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex to provide residents with a full day of health and wellness experiences,” said Caitlin L. Murphy, Chief of Public Health Innovation and Policy for the Prince George's County Health Department and Principal Investigator for PreventionLink. “This expo will provide valuable information and resources and encourage our community to make positive changes toward a healthier lifestyle.” 

“We are excited to team up with PreventionLink and bring a day full of health and fitness activities to Prince George’s County,” said Rodney McIlwain, Acting Director of Program Services Aquatics & Athletic Facilities Division of Prince George’s County Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex. “Our goal is to provide a fun and encouraging environment that inspires individuals and families to become more active and live healthier lifestyles.”

PreventionLink is a dedicated initiative focused on mitigating health disparities in the community. With funding from a five-year cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), PreventionLink aims to strengthen the integration of clinical practice and evidence-based public health programs.
