Man Shoots a Father Holding His Infant Child

UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Tyrone General, of New Carrollton, was convicted of first degree assault, second degree assault, reckless endangerment, use of a handgun and related charges for shooting Ian Reid.

On May 5, 2017, New Carrollton police officers responded to a call for service at a home that they believed was the location of a custody dispute. Upon arrival, they found Reid, 33, lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck and the defendant standing over him applying pressure to the wound.

Investigations revealed that Reid, who has shared custody with the mother of his children, was there to pick up his three children, ages five, two and nine months. After an argument ensued with the mother, Reid proceeded to leave with his infant in his arms.

Reid was able to tell one of the officers that General, 69, shot him. The defendant also admitted to the officer that he brought the gun outside and shot Reid while he was holding his nine-month-old baby.

The victim was on life support and remained hospitalized for two weeks.

“There is no justification for shooting someone holding a baby,” said State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy. “While I recognize that Mr. General admitted to what he had done and that he also provided aid, I hope that this guilty verdict sends a message that no one is above the law. If you commit a crime you will face the consequences.”

Sentencing for General is set for November 1, 2019. He faces up to 50 years in prison for his crimes.
