Statement from County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III

Regarding Immigrant Children Being Removed From Their Parents by the Trump Administration

Upper Marlboro, MD - Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, released this statement following news of thousands of immigrant children currently separated from their parents and being detained at the U.S. border.

“Once again President Trump shows us, and the world, what type of person he is. Frankly, I am disgusted by the cruel and inhumane treatment of children by our federal government, with seemingly no concern about the impact this policy has on children and families. To watch the Trump administration separate innocent children from their parents, and try to justify this action is frankly abusive. To intentionally inflict this type of emotional trauma on young children is an act that cannot and should not be justified.

As the leader of a jurisdiction with a significant immigrant population, I am concerned that these polices create chaos for our residents. We must make our voice heard and fight back and regain the moral soul of this nation. We cannot remain silent and let the atrocities of this administration go on any longer. This situation is horrible and I do not want my country to be seen in this light.

I am urging President Trump to work constructively with Congress to quickly stop this abusive and inhumane implementation of immigration policy. We need real leadership and action on this matter. And we need it now!”
