[ARCHIVED] FEMA to Change Flood Hazard Determinations

Revisions affect tidal influenced areas of Potomac River, Piscataway Creek, Broad Creek and Unnamed Tributary to Broad Creek and Oxon Run

Largo, MD - The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has issued a notice for a pending Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) which reflects revised elevations for the flood event having a one-percent chance of being equaled or exceeded in any given year (base flood).  The proposed revisions include modification of Base Flood Elevations (BFE) in the tidal influenced areas of the Potomac River, Piscataway Creek, Broad Creek, and Unnamed Tributary to Broad Creek and Oxon Run.

This LOMR, in conjunction with effective flood hazard information which is unaffected by the subject map change, is the basis for the floodplain management measures which Prince George’s County is required to either adopt or show evidence of being in effect in order to qualify or remain qualified for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Before this LOMR becomes effective for floodplain management purposes, FEMA must provide persons an opportunity to appeal the proposed information.  Any interested party may request that FEMA reconsider this LOMR within 90-days of the February 20, 2018, public notice which appeared in the Washington Times newspaper.  For information on the statutory 90-day period provided for appeals, please visit FEMA’s website

For a complete listing of affected communities and to access copies of the LOMR, please visit the Prince George’s County Department of the Environment’s website or call (301) 883-5810 to speak with Dawn Hawkins-Nixon, P.E., Associate Director, Sustainability Division, DoE.
