The Sustainability Division (SD) is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of environmental programs that protect our communities and enhance the quality of life in Prince George’s county. SD is dedicated to the management, restoration and protection of the water, air and natural resources. Through community services and outreach efforts, SD promotes a healthy environment, community involvement and environmental awareness.

FEMA to Revise Base Flood Elevations and Add Floodway
Affects Area of Patuxent River from approximately 3,870 feet upstream of Brock Bridge Drive to just upstream of Fort Meade Road 

The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has issued a notice for a pending Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) which reflects revised elevations for the flood event having a 1-percent chance of being equaled or exceeded in any given year (base flood).  The proposed revisions include the addition of a Floodway, modification of Base Flood Elevations (BFE), updates to Zone AE, and Zone X(shaded) in the Patuxent River. This LOMR, in conjunction with effective flood hazard information which is unaffected by the subject map change, is the basis for the floodplain management measures which the County is required to either adopt or show evidence of being in effect in order to qualify or remain qualified for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).    

Before this LOMR becomes effective for floodplain management purposes, FEMA must provide persons an opportunity to appeal the proposed information.  Any interested party may request that FEMA reconsider this LOMR within 90-days of the November 09, 2020, public notice which appeared in the Washington Times newspaper.  For information on the statutory 90-day period provided for appeals, please visit FEMA’s website at https://bit.ly/2UgM5IC.
