Speed Awareness Program

Speed Trailers

Speed trailers are available, at the request of civic organizations and community based associations, as a tool to survey local neighborhood traffic speeds. These trailers are equipped with radar units, which detect and display the speed of passing vehicles via a LED display board mounted on the trailer. Vehicle speed data is collected and stored to help staff assess if speed control devices are warranted in a community.

Speed trailers do not take photographs of passing vehicles; rather, they:

  •  Help make drivers aware of their speed in comparison with the speed limit
  •  Provide speed data for traffic engineers to determine applicable resolutions to abate speeding in neighborhoods
  •  Aid in the planning of new roadways

Request a Speed Trailer

To request that a speed trailer be set up as part of a Speed Awareness Program in your community, please submit a written request to the Director of DPW&T and include the following information:

  •  Name of the organization or community
  •  Contact information (name, address, telephone number(s), email address if available)
  •  Reason for the request
  •  Suggested location of where traffic should be monitored
