A rain barrel is a simple container that is used to collect rainwater from a rooftop and store it for later use around your home. For example, you can water your garden or lawn, clean your windows and doors, or wash your car. They are similar to cisterns, but are generally smaller (typically 55 gallons). Besides being easy to build, there are many benefits to rain barrels. These include:
- Providing a supplemental source of water (rain barrels reduce your water use and lower your water bill).
- Reducing stormwater runoff, which protects water quality and wildlife habitat downstream.
- Improving the health of your garden (naturally soft – free of chlorine, fluoride, and other chemicals).
- Replenishing groundwater supplies and helping to protect against flooding.
