Police Officer Cornelius L. Johnson
Bronze Medal of Valor
On January 16, 2007, Officer Johnson was flagged down by several citizens in the Landover area. One citizen advised that three suspects had broken into her shed and attempted to steal a dirt bike. The citizens were terrified because one of the suspects pulled out a gun and threatened to shoot them.
Officer Johnson requested back-up and without hesitation rushed to confront the armed suspects. As Officer Johnson approached the suspects, they fled. The armed suspect was still holding a handgun as Officer Johnson chased him on foot for several blocks. Officer Johnson apprehended the armed suspect, at which time; he realized that the suspect had disposed of the weapon.
After an exhaustive search by Officer Johnson and assisting officers, a loaded 45-caliber handgun was recovered in the yard where the suspect was arrested. The suspect was transported to the District III Investigative Section where a full confession was obtained. The other two suspects had fled the scene in a pick-up truck. When the truck was located it turned out to be stolen from Montgomery County. The vehicle was thoroughly processed; numerous fingerprints and items of evidence were successfully recovered. As a direct result of Officer Johnson’s quick and decisive actions this dangerous felon was apprehended and removed from the community.
