LARGO, MD – The Prince George's County Health Department and Prince George's Community College will sponsor a World AIDS Day event on Monday, December 2, 2013, from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., at the Prince George’s Community College, Largo Student Center, Community Rooms A, B and C. The goal of the 2013 campaign is to improve access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care services for teens and young adults who continue to be vulnerable to new infections despite ongoing efforts. Hosting the event at Prince George’s Community College will specifically target this demographic in an effort to help prevent new cases.
“This year’s theme is Getting to Zero: Zero New HIV Infections, Zero Discrimination, Zero AIDS-related deaths,”says Pamela Creekmur, Health Officer. “Prince George’s County ranks second in the state of Maryland for HIV cases and Sexually Transmitted Diseases. It is imperative that we provide our adolescents and young people with information vital to their health".
Native Prince Georgian Tray Chaney, an established author, musician, and actor who is well known from his role as “Poot” in the HBO hit show The Wire, will be the celebrity performer. In addition to his performance, the Kaiser Permanente Theater Group will perform their HIV/AIDS Theatrical Presentation. The event will also include free HIV/STI testing, offer light refreshments and giveaways, and is open to the public.
World AIDS Day is an international day of action, which occurs each year on December 1st , and continues throughout the first week in December to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. It is also an opportunity for key community leaders and partners to disseminate information about the current status of HIV/AIDS and encourage progress in prevention, treatment and care in order to stop the spread of the disease.
