Nancy Reagan, A Champion for the Foster Grandparent Program
Nancy Reagan visits St. Ann's Infant Home in Hyattsville in efforts to promote FGP programs (March 18, 1981- Reagan Library Archives)
As you may have heard, Nancy Reagan recently passed away of congestive heart failure at age 94. However, you may not know the First Lady was a champion of the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) both in California and at the White House. Advocating for the Foster Grandparent program was Mrs. Reagan's second most prominent cause after drug prevention. She first learned about FGP in 1967 while First Lady of California, visiting a school for physically and emotionally handicapped children. As First Lady, she helped promote FGP on a national level, did several site visits to FGP programs, and spoke at an FGP conference in 1981. She co-authored a book about Foster Grandparents, To Love a Child, and a song by the same title was written and dedicated to her by Hal David and Joe Raposo. Frank Sinatra recorded the song, which was debuted at a White House picnic with 600 Foster Grandparents in attendance. All proceeds from the book and record sales go to the Foster Grandparent Program.
