UPPER MARLBORO, MD -  Tomorrow, Thursday, April 24, 2014, the Prince George’s County Department of Permitting, Inspections, and Enforcement (DPIE) will demolish a blighted house in the Seat Pleasant community as the County prepares for their annual county-wide Christmas in April and Clean Up Green Up community engagement day on Saturday, April 26.

This is the 26th year that  the Christmas in April event has taken place in Prince George’s County and the second year the County’s Clean Up Green Up Initiative will take place on the same today.  Christmas In April focuses on renovating and revitalizing the homes of low income County resident and Clean Up Green Up encourages community clean ups and planting activities in neighborhoods throughout the County.

This year, Christmas in April will repair and renovate 83 homes around Prince George’s County, adding to the organization’s total of 2,300 homes and families they have assisted since 1989.  Nearly 78,000 volunteers and $40.3 million of donated materials and specialized labor from plumbers, roofers, and electricians have made Christmas In April a springtime tradition in the County.

Seat Pleasant resident, Elsie Marshall,79, has lived in her home for 40 years, uses a walker and asked Christmas in April for help with painting and cleaning.  The Office of Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III is taking the lead in coordinating volunteers to help repair and improve Ms. Marshall’s home.  During site visits to her house it was also noted that additional lighting and hand rails could be installed to improve her safety.  County Executive Baker’s office also learned that a blighted house located in the Seat Pleasant community had been an eyesore to Ms. Marshall and her neighbors for years. The office worked with the Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement over the past two months to get the necessary approvals to demolish the blighted house.
