County to pay tribute to its 5th County Executive

UPPER MARLBORO, MD -  Tomorrow, former Prince George’s County Executive Wayne K. Curry will lie in state at the Prince George’s County Administration Building, (CAB), 14741 Governor Oden Bowie Drive in Upper Marlboro, MD on Wednesday, July 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.  The event will begin with brief remarks from Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, Prince George’s County Council Chairman Mel Franklin (D-District 9) Judge Sheila R. Tillerson Adams, Administrative Judge for Seventh Judicial Circuit and Circuit Court for Prince George's County, and Reverend Perry Smith.

“This is a sad time for Prince George’s County as we say goodbye to our friend, our leader, and our icon, Wayne K. Curry,” said Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III. “I welcome and encourage all residents of Prince George’s County along with friends from around the state and region to join us as we celebrate the life of this incredible Prince Georgian and amazing American.

Attendees driving to this event will be directed to park at Show Place Arena, 14900 Pennsylvania Ave, in Upper Marlboro, MD.  Motorists should be aware that Main Street (between Water and Pratt Streets) in Upper Marlboro will be closed from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. and Governor Oden Bowie Drive will be closed from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. tomorrow.  TheBus will be available to operate shuttle service from the Equestrian Center to the County Administrative Building from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.  Residents are also encouraged to use TheBus service.  TheBus Route 20,  TheBus Route 21, TheBus Route 51 and TheBus Route 53service Upper Marlboro including from the New Carrollton and Addison Road Metro Stations.   WMATA Metrobus service also serves Upper Marlboro.  Metrobus schedules can be found here.

Wayne K. Curry served two terms as Prince George’s County Executive from 1994-2002.  As Prince George’s County’s first African American County Executive, Mr. Curry was a visionary who was devoted to the County and raised the stature of Prince George’s County locally and nationally.  From the National Harbor to FedEx Field, Wayne Curry laid the foundation for modern-day Prince George’s County.  Wayne K. Curry is the first Prince George’s County Executive to pass away since the County changed to an charter form of government in 1971.  To learn more about the life and legacy of Wayne K.
