On April 9, 2013, Maryland Governor Martin O’ Malley signed into law House Bill 1107: Prince George’s County- School System- Academic Revitalization and Effective Management Initiative, which is designed to improve the operations of our public schools by changing the governance structure. House Bill 1107 recognizes the unique needs of Prince George’s County and creates a structure that gives the County Executive and the County Council more involvement in the overall governance of schools.
The new law is very different from the County Executive’s original proposal and was strongly supported by the Prince George’s County House and Senate Delegations. It was also endorsed by numerous stakeholders (citizens groups, education administrators, teachers, parents and business professionals).
As a result of the new law, Prince George’s County is well positioned to recruit and retain a highly qualified leader for our school system. With a new leader and an expanded Board of Education, our schools can more rapidly build upon improvements experienced over the last few years by focusing on effective operations, better wrap-around support of children and greater parent engagement.
