Constituent areas include Capitol Heights, District Heights, Hillcrest
Heights, Marlow Heights, Seat Pleasant, Suitland, Temple Hills and
portions of Forestville and Oxon Hill.
Council Member Karen R. Toles (D)- represents the 7th
Councilmanic District of Prince George’s County, and was elected to her second
four-year term on the Prince George’s County Council in the 2014 General
Council Member Toles will serve as Chair of the Council’s
Health, Education and Human Services Committee for the 2015 Legislative Year.
She served as Chair of the Public Safety and Fiscal Management Committee (PSFM)
during Legislative Year 2013 and 2014. She also served as Vice-Chair of
Transportation, Housing and the Environment (THE) and of the Rules and General
Assembly Committee. Her appointments include the Board of Directors to the
Council of Governments (COG), National Association of County Officials
(NACO)-Community and Economic Development Steering Committee and Healthy
Counties Initiative Advisory Board, Maryland Association of County Officials
(MACO)-Diversity Caucus President, and Women’s Caucus Vice
President, as well as many other Boards and Commissions.
Council Member Toles, since being elected has made it her
mission to improve the quality of life of the residents of District 7, by
strengthening the county's public safety laws that has led to the dramatic
reduction in crime. She also was successful in passing legislation to create
the first ever Project Labor Agreement Laws in Prince George's County and the
State of Maryland, paving the way for county residents to be hired first on
county construction jobs.
Council Member Toles has been honored with numerous awards
such as the J.Franklyn Bourne Community Service Award, A. Phillip Randolph
Labor Leader of the year award and Community of Hope's Shining Woman of the
Prior to her election in 2010 to the County Council,
Council Member Toles worked as a political and legislative coordinator for
AFSCME Council 67. Council Member Toles was a member of President Obama’s
Transition Team, where she served as Director for the Obama Administration’s
National Day of Service Initiative for the State of Maryland. She was also
Field Director for the Democratic National Committee, responsible for creating,
training and directing the Presidential Campaign operations in Prince George’s
County and Southern Maryland.
Council Member Toles is a former Trustee to the
Prince George’s County Historical and Cultural Trust. She is a member of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and a Member of the Church of the Atonement Episcopal
Educated in Prince George’s County Public Schools,
Council Member Toles graduated from University of Maryland-College Park with a
Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health. Additionally, she has completed
advanced coursework towards a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the
University of Baltimore.
