"The Prince George's County Council joins the world in mourning the passing of civil and human rights icon, Nelson Mandela.  His life and legacy embody the triumph of immeasurable courage over unimaginable oppression. Nelson Mandela, and the movement he inspired, overcame apartheid with a message of justice, equality, and reconciliation, a message which he carried to every corner of the globe. Generations of South Africans will have opportunities for freedom and democracy because of his incredible selflessness and unbreakable spirit.

Nelson Mandela was a citizen and statesman of the world. He once said, ‘Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people.’  Nelson Mandela sacrificed his freedom for a quarter century for the freedom of countless others and his legacy lives on in each of us.”
