The Prince George’s County Human Trafficking Task Force, established by the Prince George’s County Council under Council Resolution 74-2013, will convene for the first time on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, 3:30 p.m. in the County Administration Building, Council Hearing Room 2027, 14741 Governor Oden Bowie Drive in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

The Human Trafficking Task Force will address the issue of human trafficking in Prince George’s County including educating the public about human trafficking, identifying and serving victims of human trafficking and increasing the level of prosecution of traffickers.  The Task Force will present its evaluations and recommendations to the County Council on or before May 30, 2014.

County Council Member Karen R. Toles (D) – District 7, who proposed the legislation establishing the Task Force and will serve as its Vice Chair, says the task force has been established to directly address the pervasive issue of human trafficking in Prince George’s County.

“Prince George’s County, because of its location along the I-95 corridor, serves as a central geographic zone for human trafficking,” said Council Member Toles. “Human trafficking is a heinous crime and we want to expend every available resource to effectively address this human rights violation.”

The Human Trafficking Task Force is chaired by Prince George’s County Human Relations Commission Executive Director, Michael Lyles, Esq. The 15-member Task Force includes the Chair of the County Council or the Chair’s representative; the Executive Director of the Human Relations Commission or the Executive Director’s representative; the State’s Attorney or the State’s Attorney’s representative; the Chief of Police or the Chief’s representative; the Director of Homeland Security or the Director’s representative; the Director of Social Services or the Director’s representative; the Health Officer or the Health Officer’s representative; the Sheriff or the Sheriff’s representative; the Administrative Judge of the Prince George’s County Circuit Court or the Administrative Judge’s representative; one representative from the Governor’s Task Force on Human Trafficking and the Prince George’s County Commission for Women; and two representatives from the non-profit and faith-based communities.
