Prince George's County Council Chairman Mel Franklin released the following statement regarding the commemoration of Dr. King's birthday and the National Day of Service
"Dr. King once wrote that 'we are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny; what affects one directly, affects all directly.' These immortal words written while sitting in a Birmingham jail in 1963, just four months before delivering his epic 'I Have a Dream’ speech on the National Mall, carry a profound message. People of good conscience cannot turn a blind eye to injustice, even to keep peace and order. On this National Day of Service and in honor of Dr. King, we are all reminded of our mission to serve and create fairness and opportunity for all of our residents now and in the future. We must not let complacency or the enticement of the path of least resistance prevent us from continuing to bend the arc of the moral universe towards justice."
