The Animal Management Division (AMD) provides opportunities for students to fulfill their community service requirement for graduation. Any student, 14 years of age or older, that is interested in volunteer work at the Animal Services Facility, must complete an application (PDF). Student volunteers perform routine clerical tasks such as filing, sorting mail, stuffing envelopes and data entry. Students are not allowed to work with the animals in the kennels due to the liability to the County should they be injured.
Adult volunteers (at least 18 years of age) wishing to work with the animals must complete a volunteer application and attend a one-hour orientation followed by a tour.
AMD also accepts court ordered community service volunteers. This is coordinated through Parole and Probation, Department of Public Safety and Corrections and the State of Maryland.
Anyone wishing to pursue volunteer work with the AMD should either call (301) 780-7220 or visit the shelter and obtain an application. The approval process normally takes two weeks to complete. Volunteer work is available to students on Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and for adults 18 or over from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. seven days a week.
