First Lady Leslie Johnson Hosted the Second Annual Prince George’s Women United to Help Others “Connecting Our Talents” Phenomenal Women’s Conference

Upper Marlboro, MD – Prince George's County First Lady Leslie Johnson hosted the Second Annual Prince George's Women United to Help Others "Connecting Our Talents" Phenomenal Women's Conference at Dr. Henry Wise, Jr. High School in Upper Marlboro on Saturday, November 8, 2008.

Prince George's Women United to Help Others (Prince George's WUTHO) was launched as a new Livable Communities Initiative (LCI) on March 22, 2007, during the annual Women's History Month Luncheon by Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson and the First Lady. The mission of this (LCI) is to encourage and invigorate Prince George's women to use their vast wisdom, skills, special gifts, talents and resources innovatively, to help girls and young women to reach their full potential and to prepare them as our future leaders in Prince George's County and beyond.

The conference had a two-fold purpose: (1) to help assist women in being their "best,” and (2) encourage attendees to share their special gifts and talents with girls and young women. In order to help facilitate women making the connection with other women and girls, resource vendors from various County agencies, the Prince George's Volunteer Center and non-profit organizations were on-site with program literature and sign-up information.  During the event many attendees made the commitment to work with these organizations.

“Since the inception of Prince George’s Women United to Help Others, you have heeded the call to service. We asked you to share your gifts and talents with girls and young women in our beloved County so that they will reach their full potential and you have done so in a big way,” said First Lady Johnson.

To help kick-off the conference Reginald K. Thornton, Personal Trainer and Founder of Sweat-N-Go energized the attendees with chair exercises that occurred between the speaker's presentations. The speakers included:

Dr. Michelle Craig, a medical doctor and survivor of breast cancer and domestic violence; Dr. Dawne Carroll, Founder and Medical Director of “Fit For Life,” who educated and provided information on obesity, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes; Dr. Celeste Owens, of Serenity Counseling Services, a licensed psychologist highlighted ways for women to manage and alleviate stress in their lives; Patricia Morris, Director of Family Services for Prince George’s County shared personal stories, incorporated professional advice and explained the myriad of services the county offers to caregivers of loved ones; Kelly Vaughn, Outreach Director for the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development provided a wealth of information, programs and resources regarding foreclosure and housing overall; Professor Allison Miner, Associate Professor of Nutrition for Prince George's Community College, challenged women to enhance their sex appeal and lead healthier lifestyles through a fitness and nutrition regime; Vania McNeary, Board  President of the Prince George's Volunteer Center and President Washington Savings Bank, encouraged participants to utilize the services of the volunteer center as a conduit to find an organization that focuses on assisting girls and young women in need of a helping hand; and Taylor Thomas, WHUR 96.3 FM News Anchor for "The Steve Harvey Morning Show" and host of "Let's Talk Money," provided practical tips for navigating tough financial times.

“Ladies, you know I believe that when you are gathered together, you should do so with a purpose and leave more empowered and informed then when you arrived.  I believe that you have done so today.  As a result, you will each leave better women, ready and empowered to help young people in our community rise to their full potential, as exemplified by the Prince George’s (WUTHO) success stories related today by Cornerstone Bible Impact Leadership Camp, the Cinderella Foundation, Inc. and “Meeting of the Minds,” concluded First Lady Johnson.

pgwuthologoPrince George’s Women United To Help Others (PGWUTHO) was the vision of First Lady Leslie E. Johnson. Mrs. Johnson believes that each person’s life should be committed to community service and helping to uplift others. Therefore, Mrs. Johnson thought it imperative to establish a program that would act as a vehicle for Prince George’s women from all walks of life to use their wisdom, skills, special gifts and resources to help girls and young women rise to their full potential and become future leaders in Prince George’s County and beyond. County Executive Jack Johnson shared this vision and belief; and so at the 22nd Annual Prince George’s Women’s History Luncheon celebrated on March 22, 2007, Prince George’s Women United To Help Others (PGWUTHO) was unveiled as another Livable Communities Initiative of Prince George’s County Executive Jack Johnson.
