September 2010 E-News

Dear Friends,

I hope you enjoyed your summer.  It is hard to believe that the kids are back in school and fall is upon us. The summer has been incredibly busy and I am pleased that the County Council voted to update important environmental legislation to implement the County’s Green Infrastructure Plan in mid July.  The regulations include new environmental standards for development, including those that I requested, to preserve tree canopy within the County and to protect streams.  Details can be found at this website.  The County Council will also be holding a public hearing on September 7th on legislation I drafted to further tighten regulations for pawn shops within the County.  Some of the regulations in the bill include: an increase in fines for violations and clarifying language that only used items can be pawned. In addition, the County Council will be reviewing several additional legislative items that I requested, including following up on the recommendation by the Youth and Gang Violence Task Force to establish a formal steering committee to ensure collaboration among county agencies and nonprofits in the County.  Lastly, I am pleased to announce that WMATA and MDOT are working together on a joint Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the south side of the New Carrollton Metro Station (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/22/AR2010072205796.html) and that the Original Ledo’s restaurant has reopened in College Park (4509 Knox Rd) with parking easily available at the new parking garage.

I hope you will also take the opportunity to participate in the many community events happening this month.  Take care and please call my office with any questions or concerns.
