Technical Services Division

The Technical Services Division (TSD) is one of the most diverse components of the Police Department. The Division is commanded by a Police Major and Captain and divided into five Sections. The following is the list of components within the Technical Services Division.

Technology Integration Section

Commanded by a Police Lieutenant, the Section is comprised of the Technology Support Unit and the Crime Analysis Unit.Back to Top

Technology Support Unit

This unit is responsible for the department’s information technology needs to include ordering, delivering and installing hardware, software, training, and requesting/resetting log-on information. Members of this unit also advise on the hardware and software needs of special projects. Members serve on various boards and groups in and out of the Police Department. This unit also has the responsibility of ordering and issuing communication devices and coordinating with Office of Information Technology and Communication (OITC) to get new devices programmed.Back to Top

Crime Analysis Unit

This unit is responsible for the reporting of crime statistics and trends. They utilize and produce GIS maps and other statistical reports for the department.Back to Top

Property Management Section

Commanded by a Police Lieutenant, the Section is comprised of the Mail Services Unit, Property Recovery Unit (PAWN) and the Property Warehouse Unit.Back to Top

Mail Services Unit

Members of this unit pick up and deliver mail within the Police Department and various County locations in a timely and accurate manner.Back to Top

Pawn Investigation Unit

The Property Recovery Unit is responsible for locating stolen property at pawn and secondhand dealer shops. This unit monitors the activities of the pawnshops, citing violations and taking action when necessary. This unit also conducts investigations on illegal operations.Back to Top

Property Warehouse Unit

This unit receives, catalogues, stores, releases, and destroys recovered property and evidence that is no longer for criminal prosecution.Back to Top

Data Compliance Section

Commanded by a Police Lieutenant, the Section is comprised of the NCIC and Validations Unit, Mobile Video Unit and the Telecommunications Unit.Back to Top

NCIC and Validations Unit

This unit is responsible for validating all records within the MILES/NCIC system for the Prince George’s County Police Department. They also research requests from insurance companies regarding items entered or removed from NCIC. Members of this unit conduct training for over 1300 NCIC users per year. They coordinate all audits and security reports mandated by CJIS and the FBI. Members maintain, issue, and program ORI numbers for all NCIC authorized computers, along with processing all NCIC and ORI applications. In conjunction with these duties they are also working on the following projects: VPN Encryption, RSA Tokens, and NCIC 2000.Back to Top

Mobile Video Unit

Members of this unit coordinate the Mobile Video System for the Prince George’s County Police Department. This includes issuing, collecting and documenting the issuance of all Video Tapes and DVD’s. The personnel also act as a liaison with the vendor, purchase needed equipment and write agency policies.Back to Top

Telecommunications Unit

This unit is responsible for entering and removing all MILES/NCIC records.

Auxiliary Investigations Section

Commanded by a Police Lieutenant, the Section is comprised of the Tow Coordination Unit, False Alarm Reduction Unit, and the Traffic Management Unit.Back to Top

False Alarm Reduction Unit

This unit registers residential and commercial alarm systems along with alarm companies in the County. The unit also processes false alarm calls and applies fines as permitted by County legislation. Members attend community meetings to help educate the public.Back to Top

Tow Coordination Unit

This unit tracks and researches all police related impounds and monitor all contract crane services. The Tow Coordination staff is responsible for enforcing the laws pertaining to tows and for assuring that the contract agreement with the tow companies is followed. They are responsible for legal disposal of vehicles which are held with a mechanic’s lien and abandoned, or unclaimed vehicles.Back to Top

Managed by a civilian Director, this Section is comprised of the Records Management Unit and the Uniform Crime Reporting Unit.Back to Top

Records Management Unit

Collects, maintain, store, and disseminate all police related records for law enforcement operations.Back to Top

Uniform Crime Report Unit

The Uniform Crime Report Unit is composed of a classification and a data entry component. The Classification personnel are responsible for the classification of incident reports according to Maryland State Police and Uniform Crime Report (UCR) criteria. The Data Entry personnel are responsible for the entry of all incidents, arrest, accident, and youth field reports into the mainframe database. Data Entry personnel also enter telecommunications information on recovered vehicles, property, and guns from other jurisdictions into the Police database.
