Office of Professional Responsibility

The Bureau of Professional Responsibility is comprised of the Internal Affairs Division, the Professional Compliance Division and the Special Investigative Response Team. The Bureau's mission is to oversee all internal investigations, police disciplinary action and to hold employees accountable for their conduct, both on and off-duty.

The Internal Affairs Division controls the investigative conduct of all allegations of complaints against police practices and administrative investigations. All internal cases are submitted to the Division for tracking and assignment. Depending on the seriousness and/or nature of the incident the Division will either assign a supervisor/investigator or conduct the investigation from within the unit. All departmental less than lethal force applications are also monitored.

The Professional Compliance Division continually conducts internal inspections of departmental units, supervisors, and commanders. Deficiencies revealed in these inspections are tracked and followed up on for compliance and can result in administrative sanctions.

The Special Investigative Response Team is composed of trained and experienced members of various investigative expertises. The team is responsible for the investigative conduct of all departmental firearms discharge investigations. The team also assumes investigative responsibility for any other use of force incident involving death or serious injury.
