Narcotic Enforcement Division

The Narcotic Enforcement Division conducts investigations into violations of narcotic and controlled dangerous substance laws at two levels: the Major Narcotics Section and the Technical Operations Section.

The Major Narcotic Section

The Major Narcotics Section personnel infiltrate, investigate and eliminate large-scale narcotic operations in Prince George's County. In 2000, this section seized over $43 million in controlled substances. Intelligence unit officers investigate offenses involving gambling, prostitution, racketeering, gangs and other organized criminal activity. The Interdiction Unit's main objective is to intercept and seize illegal contraband and drugs where suspects are using various modes of transportation or any form of parcel services to smuggle and facilitate drugs and/or drug proceeds in or out of Prince George's County. In 2000, this unit seized over 1,300 pounds of marijuana, having a street value of $11,840,000. Additionally, 13,000 grams of cocaine, with a street value of approximately $2,600,000 was seized. The Firearms/Disarm Unit, a newly formed unit in 2000, will focus on the identification and federal prosecution of convicted career criminals that use firearms to commit property crimes and/or crimes of violence.

The Technical Operations Section personnel conduct street level narcotics investigations. The Department's Intelligence Squad is also assigned to Technical Operations.
