Financial Crimes Unit

Identity Theft

The Prince George's County’s Financial Crimes Unit handles all identity theft incidents, when the victim resides within Prince George's County. If you are a victim of an identity theft do the following:

I. File an incident report with the Prince George's County Police Department by calling (301)333-4000. Ask for the Telephone Reporting Unit and you will be able to file your initial report over the telephone.
II. Contact one of the three major credit bureaus to report the identity fraud.
III. Request a copy of your credit history.

If there are other fraudulent accounts contact each company or bank and provide the police case number and an affidavit of forgery. After completing their investigations, these entities will usually absolve the victim of any financial responsibility.

The three major credit bureaus are:
Trans Union 1 (800) 680-7289
Experian 1 (888) 397-3742
Equifax 1 (800) 525-6285

Once you are in contact with the credit bureau you should request that a fraud alert is placed on all of your personal identifiers: Date of birth, social security number, mother’s maiden name, account numbers, soundex number, etc.

*If you live outside the jurisdiction of Prince George's County contact your local police department and file an incident report.
