The Director’s Office is responsible for providing policy direction
and coordination for the operating divisions of the Department of Corrections
through three deputy directors, each overseeing two divisions. The office
prepares position papers and speeches, reviews pending state and local legislation,
works closely with community and faith-based groups, and provides information
and tours for members of the public. Through the public information office,
the Director’s office greets visitors and works with the media. Its
Office of Legal Affairs and Professional Responsibility investigates alleged
misconduct, oversees the employee random drug-testing program, conducts trial
boards, and monitors legal issues.
The Director’s Office also partners with other county public safety agencies to provide programming material for Channel 69, the county’s public safety network. The Director’s office
oversees the more than 400-person strong volunteer and intern program.
In addition, the office works in concert with the Office of the County
Executive to promote Livable Communities and provide a high level of
customer service to the citizens and residents of Prince George’s
County. The Director’s office also oversees the COPES mentoring
program for youth in county schools and the Community Advisory Council.
Alfred J. McMurray, Sr. was named Director on May 1, 2007. He is a 25 year veteran of the Department of Corrections who became Deputy Director, Bureau of Operations, in 2003.
