Mel Franklin (D) – District 9 was elected to his first four-year term on the Prince George’s County Council in the November 2, 2010 General Election. Council Member Franklin represents the 9th Councilmanic District of Prince George’s County, which includes the constituent areas of Accokeek, Andrews Air Force Base, Aquasco, Baden, Brandywine, Camp Springs, Cheltenham, Clinton, Croom, Eagle Harbor, Fort Washington, Piscataway, and Upper Marlboro.

Council Member Franklin serves as Chair of the Planning, Zoning and Economic Development Committee (PZED). Council Member Franklin was appointed to the Human Services and Public Safety Policy Committee with the Council of Governments, and as Council Representative with the Prince George’s County Conference and Visitors Bureau. Council Member Franklin served as Maryland Assistant Attorney General from 2008-2010; Board of Trustees of Prince George’s Community College, 2008-2010; and Attorney for the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, 2001-2005.

Council Member Franklin is President and Founder of the Greater Marlboro Democratic Club, since 2005; Board Member, Indian Head Highway Area Action Council (IHHAAC), 2009-2010; Member, Prince George’s County’s Democratic Party Central Committee, District 27, 2005-2010; Member, “Complete Count” 2010 Census Committee, 2009-2010; Member, Prince George’s County Human Relations Commission, 2005-2007; Office of the State Attorney’s Citizens Action Group, 2003; Member, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Past Board Member, Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Prince George’s County Chapter; Member, NAACP, Prince George’s County Chapter; Past Executive Board Member, Young Democrats of Maryland; Young Democrat of the Year, 2006, Prince George’s County Young Democrats.

Council Member Franklin graduated from Duke University School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree in 2001. He was also admitted to the Maryland Bar that same year. He also earned a B.A. degree in political science in 1998 from the University of South Carolina.
