Application Procedures
Purpose
The Prince George's County Summer Youth Initiative provides the youth of Prince George's County, Maryland with the opportunity for a structured, supervised, and quality work experience that builds skills and assists in career decision making.
Goals
- To provide youth an opportunity to gain valuable work and learning experiences in career fields that will enhance opportunities for future employment.
- To provide youth an opportunity to develop the knowledge, employability skills and attitudes that will prepare them to become productive members of society.
- To assist youth in finding opportunities for employment and enhance their academic skills.
Categories for Service
Applicants may be eligible to participate in one of the following categories:
- Public Sector Category – applicants 15 thru 21 who meet social or financial criteria are referred for placement in the subsidized work experience or academic enhancement activities.
- Government Sector Category - applicants between the ages of 15 thru 21 are referred for placement in county government.
- Private Sector Category - applicants between the ages of 16 and 21 who are referred for placement in private business in Prince George’s County and the Metropolitan Area.
Guidelines
- Students must be in good academic standing with their school.
- Applicants under 18 years of age must have the signature of a parent or guardian.
- Applications will be accepted February 18, 2008 thru April 18, 2008.
- Applications received after April 18, 2008 will only be considered if additional jobs become available.
- To be considered applications must be accurately and fully completed.
Application Procedures
If you are called for an interview, you may be asked to bring a number of specified documents to determine your eligibility to participate in certain funded programs. Items listed below will serve this purpose. However, if you do not have these items, please call for assistance in identifying other documents that may be used.
Please note that you will need to provide verification for each section listed below if employment is offered:
A. PROOF OF AGE: Applicants must verify their date of birth. Some of the items that may be used are:
- Original Birth Certificate - must have raised seal
- Church Record (Baptismal Certificate)
- Official School Record
B. PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP: Some applicants may need to verify citizenship. Some of the items that may be used are:
- Birth Certificate
- Valid Passport
- Voters Registration Card
C. PROOF OF RESIDENCY: All applicants must verify their Prince George's County address. Some of the items that may be used are:
- Current School Year Report Card (00-05)
- Deed or lease agreement
- Maryland State driver's license or non-driver's identification card, or
- Postmarked envelope (current)
D. PROOF OF SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER: A social security card or number must be provided by the applicants, and may be required for all working members of the household. Some of the items that may be used are:
- Social Security Card
- Employment Card with social security number imprinted
- W-2 Form
E. FAMILY SIZE VERIFICATION: Some applicants may need to verify family size. Acceptable forms of verifications are:
- Current Tax Forms
- Birth Certificates for all family members
- Public Assistant Notice of Decision
- Insurance documents with all family members listed
- Notarized letter from a neighbor or minister listing all family members
F. PROOF OF STUDENT STATUS: Where applicable, student status must be verified. Acceptable verification includes:
- High School Diploma or GED certificate
- Official withdrawal letter from last school attended (must be dated 45 days prior to registration date)
- Current school year report card
G. ALIEN’S AUTHORIZATION TO WORK: Applicants who are not citizens of the United States must verify authorization to work. Any of the following may be used:
- AR-31 (Alien Registration Receipt Card)
- 1-151 or 1-155 (Registration Receipt Card)
- 1-94 (Arrival Departure Record)
A parent, legal guardian or responsible adult must accompany all applicants who are under 18.
All male applicants 18 years and older must have proof of their registration with Selective Service.
